Aparna Sen

Aparna Sen (née Dasgupta) (''Ôporna Shen''; born 25 October 1945) is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter and actress who is known for her work in Bengali cinema. A leading actress of late 1960s,1970s,1980s. She has received eight "BFJA Award", five for best actress,two for best supporting actress and one for lifetime achievement award. She is the winner of three National Film Awards and nine international film festival awards for her direction in films. She was awarded the "Padma Shri',the fourth highest civilian award,by the government of India in 1987.
Sen made her debute in "Teen Kanya"() and received her success with "Aparichito"(). She went on to established herself as a leading actress of Bengali Cinema with the films "Aranyer Din Ratri"(), "Ekhane Pinjar"(), "Jay Jayanti"(), "Memshaheb"(), "Jiban Saikate"(), "Basanta Bilap"(), "Sonar Khancha"(), "Sujata"(), "Alor Thikana"(), "kajallata"(), "Raag Anuraag"(), "Jana Aranya"(), "Ajasra Dhanyobad"(), "Proxy"(), "Mohonar Dike"(), "Ekanto Apon"(), "Swet Patharer Thala"(). She also garnered critical acclaim for her work in"Indira"(), "Kari Diye Kinlam"(), "Ek Din Achanak"(), "Mahaprithibi"(), "Unishe April"(), "Paromitar Ekdin"(), "Titli"(), "Antaheen"(), "Chatushkon"().
In addition to acting in films, sen also has been directing films since 1981 with "36 Chowringhee Lane" for which she won National Film Award (India) for Best Director. She went on to achieved further more success in direction with films "Parama", "Sati", "Yugant", "Paromitar Ek Din", "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer", "15 Park Avenue", "The Japanese Wife", "Iti Mrinalini", "Goynar Baksho". She won her second National Film Award as a director for "Mr. and Mrs. Iyer".
==Biography==
Aparna Sen was born in Calcutta to a Bengali family, originally from Jessore District, Bangladesh. Her father is the veteran critic and filmmaker Chidananda Dasgupta. Her mother Supriya Dasgupta was a prominent costume designer and earned National Film Award for Best Costume Design for Aparna's directorial venture Amodini (1995), at the age of 73. Supriya is the cousin of renowned Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. Sen spent her childhood in Hazaribagh and Kolkata and had her schooling in South Point High School Kolkata, India.
She studied her B.A. English at Presidency College.
